Center of Rare Urogenital Diseases and Complex Conditions (UROGEN) in VUH SK is a member of eUROGEN.
eUROGEN is a European Reference Network for Rare Urogenital Diseases and Complex Conditions.
Center of rare urogenital diseases and complex disorders coordinates the team of experts, working in three main areas: Rare congenital uro-recto-genital anomalies, functional urogenital conditions requiring highly specialized surgery and rare urogenital tumors. As a part of eUROGEN, it aims to improve diagnosis and create more equitable access to high-quality treatment and care for these patients, needing higly specialized surgery.The team includes adult urologists, pediatric urologists, pediatric nephrologists, pediatric and adult oncohematologists, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric gynecologists, psychologists, geneticists, nurses-urotherapists. Specialists of the Center have an advantage of full range of diagnostic procedures provided by VUH SK, including prenatal consultation, modern radiologic, genetic and histopathologic tests. When local expertise is insufficient in diagnosing and treating patients, consultations with other European centers take place on internet platform (Clinical Patient Management System). Our center specializes in treating patients with: adrenogenital syndrome, other sexual development disorders, myelomeningocele, neurogenic bladder, all urogenital tumors, bladder or cloacal exstrophy, epispadia, persisten cloaca and other urorectal anomalies, complex hypospadia, urolithasis, urethral stricture, interstitial cystitis. Reconstructive and minimally invasive surgery, modern laparoscopic tools, endoscopic percutaneous and retrograde surgery, all modern tools for oncotherapy, psychologic and social support are employed to manage these conditions.
We have the widest experience in Lithuania in managing complex congenital anomalies.
We use a unique VUH SK monitoring system, which is used to gather information about new patients, course of the disease and treatment efficacy.
Biomedical research and development is a top priority for our competence center. Specialists at the competence center plan epidemiologic studies of treatment results and improve treatment protocols according to evidence based medicine. Center‘s specialists participate in international conferences where they improve their knowledge and present local research results.
Our center‘s specialists, together with Center of rare kidney diseases and malformations of the urogenital system, organize multidisciplinary consultations for spina bifida patients. There is currently ongoing research for:
1. Infertility diagnosis and treatment for children with cryptorchidism.
2. Influence of ethiologic and pathogenetic factors of obstructive uropathies on the prognosis of urinary system function.
3. Artificial urethra in the treatment of hypospadia and urethral strictures.
Specialists of the competence centre are also participating in the international projects: Consensus on Management of Obstructive Uropathies, Prospective cohort study of congenital anomalies. Management and Outcomes of Congenital Anomalies in Low-, Middle-, and High-Income Countries, Aetiologic Research into Genetic and Occupational/Environmental Risk Factors for Anomalies in Children.
