Center of Lipidology is the largest diagnostic, treatment, teaching and research center of lipid metabolism disorders in Lithuania. It was established in 2013. We treat patients from Lithuania and abroad with familial hypercholesterolemia and other rare congenital dyslipidemias.
Center of Lipidology provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. Many healthcare specialists are employed in the center: cardiologists, nephrologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, dietologists, geneticists, transfuziologists. To achieve the best possible diagnostic accuracy and optimal treatment plan patients are discussed in multidisciplinary team meetings, treatment efficiency is continuously evaluated, long-term follow-up plans are made. When needed, the patients and patient relatives receive extensive testing to evaluate their condition and diagnose early. The Center uses state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment methods, wide range of laboratory testing with a possibility to send samples abroad. Specialists prescribe appropriate medications or plasmaphereses. Sufficient and timely treatment helps to stop the progression of the diseases, may prevent severe and lethal complications. Treatment efficiency and possible adverse events, treatment corrections, are discussed with the patient and among healthcare specialists.
Center of Lipidology employs highly experienced healthcare specialists, skilled in treating familial hypercholesterolemia and other dyslipidemias. One of the most well-known physicians in the Center, prof. Žaneta Petrulionienė is the head of the I (first) Department of Cardiology and Angiology and a professor at Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Institute of Clinical Medicine Clinic of Cardiac and Vascular Diseases. Her areas of interest are – primary and secondary prevention of CVD, morbidity and mortality tendencies, risk profiling, lipidology, lipid reducing drugs, national familial heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. She participates in worldwide familial hypercholesterolemia projects and is a national leader of International Project ScreenPro FH (Screening Project for Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, Project leader Prof. Richard Ceska) and a national leader of International Project Global EAS FH Studies Collaboration (EAS FHSC – Project leader prof. Kausik Ray)
Prof. Žaneta Petrulionienė is well known in the region for her studies, lectures, articles and publications on atherosclerosis and CVD prevention. Together with her co-workers she has published numerous articles in international and national journals on preventive cardiology (over 90 publications, theses, articles can be found in “ISI Web of Science”)
In 2017 Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite has awarded prof. Žaneta Petrulionienė with The Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas
Center of Lipidology is one of the largest centers in Baltic countries based on the number of patient consultations. In 2019, we carried out over 1600 outpatient consultations. Our team has access to clinical, biochemical, microbiological, immunological, genetic tests, radiology department and modern methods of diagnostics.
Center of Lipidology is a member of European Reference Network MetabERN from 2016. More information about MetabERN: https://metab.ern-net.eu
The Center has a unique monitoring system which collects data and helps us to track patients diagnosed with rare congenital dyslipidemias. Data in the system is continuously renewed and analyzed. In 2020, we had 159 patients enrolled in the center’s monitoring system.
Biomedical research is a priority in the Center of Lipidology. We promote medical innovations and seek to offer modern treatment for patients suffering from lipid metabolism disorders. Center of Lipidology organizes epidemiologic studies of treatment effectiveness and constantly improve treatment protocols according to evidence-based medicine. Specialists of the center regularly participate in international conferences where they refresh their knowledge and present center’s research results.
